Household Recycling Collections

Waste Minimisation

Islington now operates a recycling scheme for people living in housing, but there are very limited facilities available for flat-dwellers. There are street based recycling facilites but as they usually are located away from estates and blocks: this means people living in flats often have to travel considerable distances to dispose of their bottles, paper & cans. It is even more difficult to dispose of many other recyclable products in a environmentally sound way.

Since the summer of 2002 cally timebank has been running a household recycling scheme in the Westbourne Estate area. Residents who register with the time bank can use crates to collect their recycling in.

  • Paper: including newspapers & magazines
  • Tins & cans (rinsed)
  • Glass bottles & jars
  • Clothes

We have collected about 500 kilograms of recycling from households since August/September 2002 and the tenants who have participated for more than 6 months have been awarded a compact flourescent lightbulb which will help cut their electricity bills.
